Snorkeling tours in Tambrauw coast of West Papua, Indonesia with Charles Roring
Marine Tours in Tambrauw regency of Indonesia
Tambrauw is the name of a regency in West Papua province of the Republic of Indonesia. Its local government has declared its territory as conservation regency. As a consequence no mining, logging and other activities that are harmful to the environment will be allowed. To support local economy, local government of Tambrauw support the development and promotion of environmentally friendly tourism.
Tambrauw regency has got a number of interesting attractions which tourists can see while exploring its coastal and mountaineous areas. Some of them are described as follows:

Leatherback turtle was laying eggs
  • Turtle watching - There are four species of turtles that land on the beach of Tambrauw to lay eggs. They are the Leatherback Turtles, Green Sea Turtles, Hawksbill Turtles and Olive Ridley turtles.
  • Snorkeling and freediving - There are coral reef areas along the beach of Tambrauw, and Pulau Dua where tourists can visit to enjoy swimming, snorkeling and freediving. Visitors need to bring their own snorkeling gear such as mask, snorkel and flippers if they want to see the marine life. A good underwater camera such as Nikon W300 or a D-SLR camera with waterproof housing will be useful for taking pictures of fish, sea star, lionfish, striped surgeonfish, sea urchin, and other marine creatures. There is no scuba dive center in the regency so, I cannot offer diving trips at the moment.
  • Fishing - Visitors can also enjoy fishing at the blue sea of the regency. Please, also bring your own fishing gear. Fish such as tuna, or even red snapper can be caught for a delicious lunch or dinner.
  • Bat watching - There are a lot of bats in Pulau Dua area, they play important roles in polination of flowers in the forest of New Guinea
  • Hiking, Camping, Birding and Wildlife Watching - Most of the territories of Tambrauw is covered by tropical rainforest. It is the natural habitat of hundreds of species of birds including Palm Cockatoo, Eclectus Parrot, Rufous-bellied Kookaburra, Lesser Birds of Paradise, King Bird of Paradise, Common Paradise Kingfisher, Western-crowned Pigeon, Pinon Imperial Pigeon, Sulphur-crested Cockatoo, as well as coastal birds such as Tern, Sand Piper, and even the migratory bird - the Northern Phalarope. Tourists need to bring their binoculars, spotting scope and camera with telephoto lens to watch and take pictures of the birds. For the purpose of camping in the forest or remote beach, we can provide camping gear.
How to get there
Please, fly from your country to Indonesia. The capital of this country is Jakarta. After arriving in Jakarta, you could continue your trip by taking a domestic flight to Sorong city. I could meet you at the airport and organize your trip to Tambrauw regency. Airlines such as Garuda, Batik Air, Sriwijaya Air, Lion Air have got regular flights between Jakarta and Sorong city.
Cost
The cost of the tour in Tambrauw regency depends on the number of participants and duration of the trip which visitors have. One the average, visitors spend around 4 to 5 days exploring the coastal area of Tambrauw.

Olive-backed Sunbird

This is the picture of Olive-backed Sunbird (Cynniris jugularis) which I saw when I was guiding a lady on a snorkeling and birding tour in Waigeo island of Raja Ampat. The sundbird has got yellow color on its belly with blue feather on its throat. I shot it using my old camera Fujifilm HS50EXR.  We also watched Red Bird of Paradise, Sulphur Crested Cockatoo, Kingfisher, Pink-spotted Fruit Dove, Papuan Blyth's hornbill and a lot of other birds that live in the forest and coastal area of Raja Ampat.

For snorkeling, we went to seome uninhabited islands that were not too far from the main Waigeo island. It was really a nice experience because we could see beautiful nature, colorful birds and swim at secluded white sandy beach of Raja Ampat.
If you are interested in taking an adventure tour in Raja Ampat or other areas in West Papua, please, contact me by e-mail to: peace4wp@gmail.com or by whatsapp: +6281332245180.

Butterfly for Tank Top

I cut a butterfly out of a photograph yesterday and uploaded into the image folder of my Zazzle account. Then I placed it on a gray tank-top. At first I wanted to put it as a small picture on the top left side where the pocket is usually placed but later I re-positioned the picture in to the middle of the t-shirt.
The brown butterfly lives in the jungle of Manokwari particularly in the lowland forest that grows near the Pami river. I shot it using my Nikon Coolpix P500 and used the pen tool of Adobe Photoshop to create a cut out picture of the insect that I saved in PNG format. Why png instead of jpg? Well, png is a file format that allows the creation of transparent area around or inside a picture.  I already have got some vector illustrations that I uploaded into Zazzle to create t-shirts and other interesting articles that are manufactured by the online retail company. I also uploaded some of them into my personal account in Facebook.
I deliberately used Facebook to assess whether my friends like the image or not. I admit that I still need more time to master vector drawing software such as the ancient but still powerful Macromedia Freehand MX or the Adobe Illustrator. I will try to upload more vector artworks into Zazzle. Please, check them on the top right navigation bar to check them out. I hope that you will like them and will be interested in ordering some t-shirts or iPhone cases.
When people buy my artworks in the form of t-shirts, they will wear them. It means they have indirectly promote the butterfly to anybody whom they pass by along the streets that they walk. I really hope that we will give more attention to the preservation of the environment particularly the natural habitat of the butterfly.

Digital Illustration of a Butterfly

I like art. I have created a lot of sketches and paintings in the last five years and now I am thinking of learning digital illustration. So, I installed Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and Macromedia Freehand MX in my computer. Although Freehand MX is considered as dead. I like it very much. Yes, in 2013, I install Macromedia Freehand MX in my laptop. It is fast and very easy.
Well, I will not talk about the software in this post. A few minutes ago, I have just finished drawing a butterfly using Adobe Photoshop CS3. Because I am still in a beginning level, my artwork is not perfect yet. I will try to spend more time reading tutorials of the above software that are abundantly available on the internet to master the software.
The some of colors that I apply on this illustration are similar to the original colors of the butterfly in its natural habitat. Unfortunately, when I export it into GIF format, the middle body of the insect disappeared. It means, I have to improve my drawing or tracing skills when using Photoshop. There are still a lot of features of the software that I don't know. It takes time to master them but I believe that I can do that. Hope to create better artworks next time. by Charles Roring/ Email: charlesroring@gmail.com
