Rainforest Bird and Wildlife Tour in Sorong regency

Sorong city is the main gate to Raja Ampat. Visitors have to fly to this city before they could continue their trip by boat or by fast ferry to tropical islands in Raja Ampat. 
Sorong city is located in mainland West Papua. Lowland and hill rainforest around Sorong are great sites for visitors who are interested in exploring the biodiversity of birds, reptiles, mammals, insects and tropical vegetation of New Guinea's rainforest.

In late November 2014, I and my friend Nico Nauw entered Klasow valley for the first time. The jungle "village" of Malagufuk was still a 2 week old hamlet with only 2 big tents as "houses" for the villagers.

At that time there were no guides or bird tour companies that knew the existence of this village. After promoting the forest to the internet through various blogs, websites and social media, more people are now visiting Malagufuk and Klasow valley.

As a matter of fact, Malagufuk is not the only village which tourists can visit to do rainforest tour, bird and wildlife watching. There are a lot of villages as well that tourists can visit. Some of them were Klatomok, Asbaken, Batu Lubang, Della, Siwis, Makbon, Jeflio. There are also villages in Klasow valley that are part of Tambrauw regency such as Mega.

Visitors need some preparations before taking this rainforest, bird and wildlife tour in Sorong regency. Binoculars, camera with telephoto lens such as D-SLR camera with Sigma 150-600 mm sport lens, or bridge camera Nikon P900, Nikon P1000, Canon SX70HS, Sony H400, spotting scope and field guide book Birds of New Guinea are items that visitors need to bring.
