West Papua is a paradise for birds. Visitors who travel to Indonesia often choose this province if they want to watch beautiful tropical birds such as Wompoo Fruit Dove, Pink-spotted Fruit Dove, Brown Cuckoo Dove, Great Cuckoo Dove, Pinon Imperial Pigeon, Pied Imperial Pigeon, Western-crowned Pigeon, Common Paradise Kingfisher, Red-breasted Paradise Kingfisher, Yellow-billed Kingfisher, and a lot of other species that live in rainforest.

Lesser Birds of Paradise (Paradisaea minor) |
A bird watcher needs to bring a good pair of binoculars, camera with telephoto lens such as Nikon Coolpix P1000, Sony Cybershot RX10 IV, Canon SX70HS, Panasonic Lumix FZ80 or real D-SLR camera that is equipped with telephoto lens. Some birdwatchers bring laser pointer, spotting scopes and tripod too. In addition to the above devices, a field guide book, Birds of New Guinea by Thane K. Pratt and Bruce Beehler at al or another similar title by Phill Gregory is needed by tour participant when birding in West Papua. Birding is usually carried out in the morning and at night.
