Each of the cruise ship Oasis of the Seas and the Allure of the Seas is powered by 3 x Wärtsilä 12V46D marine engines and 3 × Wärtsilä 16V46D engines. Three 20-MW ABB Azipod propellers are used to propel each ship. These are electric propellers that can be turned 360 degrees to provide high maneuverability to the ships in restricted waters. In addition to their excellent maneuverability, the use of Azipods allows naval architects and marine engineers to have more flexibility in choosing the installation locations of the marine engines with their the generator sets. Azipod propellers in the Oasis of the Seas and the Allure of the Seas have eliminated the need for such conventional propulsion system as main propulsion motors, long shaft-lines and bearings, and rudders.

Because of these eliminations, the spaces inside the ships' hull can be used for more payload. For engineers who worked in the shipyard, the use of electric propulsion system could save more installation hours. As the manufacturer of the Wärtsilä 46 engine, Wärtsilä says their marine engines are fully in compliant with IMO Tier II exhaust emission regulations set out in Annex VI of the MARPOL 73/78 convention. Marine engines that were mounted in vessels on or after January 1 2011 have to face the stricter regulation. The six Wärtsilä 46 marine engines generate electrical power that is used to propel each of the cruise ships and to supply electricity for the operation of the floating hotels and all the systems of in vessels. by Charles Roring
